Korean automakers Hyundai, announced plans to introduce an eight-speed automatic transmission, as a way to enhance fuel savings. Hyundai has not yet decided which 2010 model will receive the new transmission. Currently, Lexus is the only manufacturer offering an 8-speed transmission; while BMW is quite likely to follow suit in the next couple of years.
Hyundai is making an all-out effort at improving overall mileage figures, as new government rules make it mandatory for car manufacturers to tow the line as far as minimum fuel economy regulations go. The 8-speed transmission is expected to increase torque and allow for a broader power band, which translates into collective fuel savings.
Hyundai’s new flagship sedan, the Genesis and the Sonata are likely contenders for the new transmission. With the new Genesis, Hyundai takes a bite out of the segment dominated by well-established luxury marques such as Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. By 2010, Hyundai’s new in-house developed 8-speed automatic will be all geared up for the car-buying public.
