BMW X5BMW announced pricing for its 335d and X5 xDrive35d turbo diesel models for the United States: the BMW 335d will list at $44,725 and the X5 diesel will retail at $52,025. Both vehicles qualify for the IRS Alternative Motor Vehicle Tax Credit, not yet determined.

According to BMW, the torque generated on the two models precludes the fitting of a 6-speed manual to the engine; therefore both vehicles will initially be sold only with a 6-speed Steptronic automatic. The 335d and X5 xDrive35d receive a 3.0-liter turbo diesel rated for 265 horsepower and 425 lb-ft. of torque.

BMW has not sold diesel vehicles in the United States since 1986. At the Detroit Auto Show in 2007, BMW displayed their latest six cylinder clean diesel, ready to be introduced to the U.S. market in 2008. The X5 and 3-series were the first models to get the enhanced efficiency of the diesel engine. The first shipments of X5 xDrive35d and BMW 335d, both powered by a twin turbocharged 3.0 inline six cylinder diesel, will arrive at dealerships across the country late in 2008.
